NEWSLETTER – Edition 100

In October, pretty much every high school junior in the nation took the PSAT. Scores were released yesterday and today, and now many are wondering what’s next.

First, take a few moments to understand how the PSAT is scored. 760 is the maximum score for the Reading/Writing section as well as the Math section.  In addition to your overall score, the report tells if you’re on track to handle college-level work (look for the green checkmark or yellow exclamation point). The answer key lets you know which questions you missed, and the level of difficulty for each of those questions.

Second, find your National Merit Index number. A small percentage of juniors will achieve the cut-off for recognition as Commended or Semi-Finalist status. In Oklahoma, the past few years have seen this number trending around 210/211 – but we won’t know for certain until Fall 2023. If you’re at that threshold or above, stay tuned!

Third, use the PSAT to determine how well you might perform on the SAT. While 70% of the knowledge points between the SAT and ACT are similar, the overall approach between the two is very different. Decide which one might be best suited for you, and make a plan for testing in the Spring/Summer of 2023.

The ins & outs of standardized testing can be confusing. Plus, so much has changed over the last couple of years. With ‘test optional’ policies, is taking a standardized test even necessary?
