MERRY HOLIDAY CONVERSATIONS

Inevitably, it’s going to happen. Someone at a holiday gathering is going to ask a high school senior, “Where are you going to college?” or “Where have you applied?,” “What’s your ACT score?,” or, maybe even, “Did you hear that Matt got into Stanford?” Most seniors are dreading any question along these lines. It’s because many are still pushing to get applications submitted by January 1. They’re worried they won’t be accepted anywhere. They feel like asking for their ACT score is similar to asking about someone’s weight or age. And at this point, they don’t really care about Matt’s plans!  

Sure, friends and family are well-intentioned. Most are just trying to make conversation. However, to a high school senior in the midst of the college admissions process, these questions can be super annoying. Instead of asking about next year, stick to the current year. Most high school seniors are thrilled to talk about what’s going on this year! Ask about sports, clubs, community service projects, and hobbies. In my role as a college admissions consultant, I can see the tension building as seniors go into the holidays. Some students are done applying. Some students have been accepted and are ready to put down a deposit for next fall. However, many students are still processing the last of their applications.
