Grandmotherly Advice for the Class of 2041
It was an exciting Mother’s Day for me! You already know that I am blessed to be the mother of Grayson, Cooper, and Delaney. And last year, I gained a bonus daughter when Grayson married Shelby. This year, I am excited to start my role as grandmother to Miss Tallulah Gray, born on May 3rd.
As I think about my annual Mother’s Day advice, I realize that the basics never change. Whether I’m thinking about the Class of 2024 or the Class of 2041, there are some mainstays. I will use a few of my favorite children’s books to highlight the details:
🎀 Read – “The more that you read, The more things you will know. The more that you learn, The more places you’ll go.” – I Can Read with My Eyes Shut! By Dr. Suess.
🎀 Explore – “She started with Why? and then What? How? and When? By bedtime she came back to Why? once again. She drifted to sleep as her dazed parents smiled at the curious thoughts of their curious child, who wanted to know what the world was about. They kissed her and whispered, ‘You’ll figure it out.’” – Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty
🎀 Have Playdates – “After all, one can’t complain. I have my friends.” – Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne
🎀 Get Your Hands Dirty – A little drop of paint lets your imagination run wild. A smidge and a smear can make magic appear.” – Beautiful Oops by Barney Saltzberg
🎀 Get Enough Sleep – “It’s time to sleep, little bird, little bird. So close your eyes, not another word.” – Time for Bedby Mem Fox
🎀 Be Yourself – “A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you’ll always look lovely.” – The Twits by Roald Dahl
I have plenty of time to share this advice with Tallulah. But if your loved one is in the Class of 2024, 2025, or 2026, now is definitely the time to start thinking about college.
