SHOULD ‘YIELD’ IMPACT HOW YOU APPLY TO COLLEGE?
I’ve quoted Jeff Selingo on more than one occasion in this weekly newsletter. He’s the New York Times best-selling author of Who Gets In and Why? And when it comes to reporting on education trends, he’s definitely one to follow. He recently published a newsletter article about ‘yield’ and how it is impacting ‘early decision’ admissions. No, we’re not talking about the traffic sign type of yield. We’re talking about the yield in college admissions – which is the percentage of students who choose to enroll in a particular college after having been offered admission.
Basically, yield is a tool that colleges use to make themselves look more selective. To boost yield, many colleges have recently turned to taking more students through the ‘early decision’ round of admissions. Since this round is a binding decision, colleges are able to better control the overall yield of their freshman classes. And by taking more and more students through this round, certain colleges are increasing their reputations as being ‘highly selectively.’ Ultimately, this means fewer seats are available for those applying through regular decision.
Not all colleges are taking this approach. However, it is important to evaluate the trends at the colleges on your list.
