4 STATS to Understand While Researching Colleges

It’s the end of August and you’re in the middle of researching colleges. You’ve looked at acceptance rates as well as the percentage of students who receive financial aid. But have you taken a moment to consider these key statistics:

1 – Percentage of applicants who do and do not submit test scores. This ratio has become more significant as test-optional admissions continue to be offered by many colleges. For example, you’ll have a better idea of the overall applicant pool knowing a college is test-optional but find that a majority of applicants submit test scores.

2 – Retention Rate. This refers to the number of first-time, full-time undergraduate students who return to this particular college for their sophomore year. Listed as a percentage, a college’s retention rate can give you an indication of freshmen’s satisfaction and success at this particular college.

3 – Four-Year Graduation Rate. This stat tracks the percentage of undergraduate students who graduate in four years or less. Colleges are also required to share their 6-year graduation rates. This stat will help you determine how well the college keeps its students on track and can provide insight into how easy or difficult fulfilling graduation requirements might be.

4 – Percentage of students accepted to graduate school. If your student already has plans to pursue post-secondary education (law, medical, vet, master’s, etc.), be sure to examine how many recent graduates a college sends to graduate programs. This stat can help you determine if this particular college adequately prepares students for the rigors of graduate work while also revealing how closely professors work with undergraduates.

Every part of the college admissions process requires information. These key stats are just a few of the things you need to consider.
