THE COLLEGE ESSAY
Application season is less than a week away – which means that the college essay is already top of mind for many rising seniors. With admissions trends moving toward holistic reviews and away from standardized tests, the personal essay has become a more critical piece of the overall application. And yet, seniors should look at this as an opportunity to share, not to perform. The best essays are authentic, providing insight into what makes the applicant tick. Common App offers seven prompts to ignite the thought process. No matter which topic you choose, remember:
🔹 Choose a topic that is interesting or meaningful to you.
🔹 Answer the prompt.
🔹 Tell the reader something about yourself that he/she doesn’t already know after reviewing the rest of your application.
🔹 Make sure it sounds like you – like something you would write.
🔹 Tell a short story. What happened? Why does it matter?
🔹 Focus on your characteristics, not your accomplishments.
🔹 Write the essay and then set it aside for a day or two. Fresh eyes can do wonders.
🔹 Read it aloud to yourself. Have someone else read it aloud to you.
🔹 Don’t wait until the last minute to start. It takes longer than you think!
